Chaired by guest co-curators Nina Czegledy and Pasha Ian Clothier, this panel introduces indigenous leadership in regard to environmental practice and systems of knowledge, including Polynesian traditional navigation and fluid dynamics. Thanks to the engagement with Māori, Aotearoa New Zealand can join worldwide groups as leaders in bringing about a sustainable future, which is critical to future generations.

    • Nina Czegledy

      Nina Czegledy collaborates on art, science & technology projects internationally. She is Adjunct Professor, Ontario College of Art and Design University, Research Fellow KMDI, University of Toronto, Governing Board Leonardo/ISAST, Leonardo LASER co-chair, Chair Intercreate org, New Zealand, Researcher NOEMA Italy. Upcoming curatorial projects: A Light Footprint in the Cosmos, Vancouver 2022, Sensoria The Art and Science of our Senses, Gdansk (2022), Most recent curatorial projects: Agents for Change/ Facing the Anthropocene, Canada (2020) Who's You? JD Reid Gallery, New Zealand (2019); Leonardo 50th, ARS Electronica, Austria (2018). Czegledy pioneered international touring exhibitions of experimental art, including the art of indigenous peoples.

    • Maata Wharehoka

      Parihaka’s Maata Wharehoka (Taranaki) is heavily involved in her community and passing on knowledge to future generations. She has been the caretaker of the marae for nearly 30 years and is a driving force behind Parihaka’s focus to be a self-sufficient community. She received a Ngā Tohu ā Tā Kingi Ihaka Te Waka Toi Award in 2015, which honours kaumātua and kuia who have devoted their lives to strengthening Māori culture through their support of Māori arts.

    • Desna Whaanga-Schollum

      Desna’s work is connected through the exploration and articulation of cultural identity. Projects see her collaborating with a wide variety of communities, business and design professionals, artists and academics to achieve results which effect change in people, practice and place. Desna is actively involved in Māori identity design, discourse and stakeholder engagement in Aotearoa, via design consultancy, research, exhibitions, wānanga, speaking engagements and governance roles. Her work also involves exploring mātauranga Māori (traditional knowledge) values within resource (i.e. environmental management).

    • Pasha Ian Clothier

      Pasha Ian Clothier is an eighth generation descendant of Hitiaurevareva, a small Pacific island. They are a PhD candidate at Auckland University of Technology which has a core focus on traditional Polynesian navigation techniques. Their work has been selected for seven ISEA exhibitions and they have curated international exhibitions under the leadership of Dr Te Huirangi Waikerepuru. Pasha’s career extends to one hundred and ten public exhibitions in seventeen countries, along with twenty-seven publication credits including the Oxford University Press Handbook of Sound Art (2021).

    • Michael MacDonald

      Dr Michael MacDonald is a lecturer in Fluid Mechanics/Aerodynamics in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Auckland. His post-doctoral scholarship was with NASA’s JPL at Caltech. Along with research into the numerical simulation of turbulent heat and fluid flows, he is currently working on the intersection of kowhaiwhai (a Māori traditional visual art form) and fluid dynamics, with Pasha Clothier.
